Lanzarote is the most Easterly of the Seven Islands of the Canarian Archipelago in the Atlantic ocean. Together with Fuerteventura & Gran Canaria it belongs to the civil province of Las Palmas, and is the fourth largest island in the chain with an area of 850 km2 and has about 140,000 inhabitants. The nearby islands of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and the furthest one, Alegranza all fall under the jurisdiction of Lanzarote. The island measures 60 km. in length by 25 km. at the maximum width, and the highest point is Mount Cache at 675 m (2214 ft). Lanzarote is obviously of volcanic origin and although its exact age is unknown, it is generally thought that it was formed by eruptions 15 million years ago. 75% of its total area is covered with volcanic lava and the island features over 100 craters giving it a spectacular 'lunar' landscape.
